******
Buffy watched with wide eyes from the floor as Wesley, the once stuck up man,
pulled out a shotgun, shooting the demon once. She had to blink a stream of
blood from her eye to see what was happening. Every muscle in her body ached
and they were only a couple of minutes into the fight. Pain ebbed at her and
darkness pulled her, trying to take her into it's depths. She couldn't black
out now. The demon kicked all of their asses and Angel was still trying to
recover with two arrows sticking out of him.

A dread was filling her stomach, it wasn't that kind of dread someone feels
when they know that they will run into a traffic jam. It was a thousand
times worse than that. It was the end of the world kind of dread.

Hope flickered into her as she saw the demon fall on it's knees with Wesely
standing over it, ready to deliver a final shot to the head. Buffy let out a
pained scream as she forced herself onto her feet. The large ugly demon
snapped his head up and threw Wesley across the room. The hope died inside of
her and she knew that it would never come back.

This thing was immune to bullets, swords, any kind of weapons. Angel let out
a roar of rage and the lovers locked eyes. He felt it. They shared that same
deep connection and Angel felt the same dread that his Slayer was feeling.

They attacked at the same time, Angel attacked his stomach and face with his
bare hands. Buffy pounded hard the back of his neck and legs, trying to force
him to his knees. The demon spun wildly and with one strong arm, threw the
Slayer twenty feet away.

Buffy fell hard, knocking the back of her head against the cement. Stars
exploded into her vision and she felt blood matting her hair. She coughed
violently, trying to return the air to her lungs but all she felt was a sharp
sting.

Angel looked at his fallen lover as she struggled back to her feet. The demon
in front of him was winning horribly. The vampire's knuckled bled as he swung
repeatedly at the demon. Hitting it's skin was like hitting metal and soon
his knuckles were torn open and bleeding profusely. Every hit was a solid hit
that would have knocked any demon's head off but this thing was barely even
acknowledging. It was nothing more than a small pinprick, while it was
killing his team. His family. His lover.

"Angel!" Buffy screamed as she saw something sharp enter the smooth column of
his lovers throat. Buffy ran towards them as Angel froze, making a gurgling
noise, his eyes wide with shock as the demon whispered something to him.
Buffy could have wept when she saw blood bubbling from Angel's lips. His
beautiful lips that had kissed her and promised his and hers safety before
they entered this horrible fight. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw
Wesley and Gunn retreating and Lorne was nowhere to be seen. This battle was
lost. And what a loss it was.

With an anguished scream, Angel was thrown by the large demon that would
surely bring the destruction of LA. Angel flew into the air, knocking hard
into Buffy and they both fell from the building.

When Buffy opened her eyes, she wanted nothing more than for the recent
events to be just some horrible nightmare and she would simply wake up
Angel's arm, just like every other day. But when she say that she was
sprawled on top of a beaten and broken Angel, she knew that this was not a
nightmare.

"Angel," Buffy whispered brokenly, pushing herself off him with a groan. She
blinked up at the dark sky to the top of the building, Angel had broke what
would have been a very painful fall. Another gurgling sounds erupted from his
throat and he lifted a weak arm to his neck where the jagged piece of metal
was buried in. Buffy quickly wiped away more blood that split from his lovely
lips with her sleeve.

"Hold on to me," She whispered and she felt Angel grab her hand roughly,
squeezing her fingers together to the point of pain. He knew what the Slayer
had to do. Buffy took a deep breath and quickly tore the metal from his neck.
A throaty yell of pain from her lover made Buffy wince, tears stinging her
eyes. This was it. She knew that this was the end of her days. Her champion
had fallen and she knew she was going to fall with him.

Weariness creeped into her features and she pulled Angel up to a sitting
position while holding two fingers to the gaping wound in this throat.

"Shh, it's okay. I'm here," Buffy whispered softly to the ensouled vampire,
trying to calm his gasps and wheezes of pain. Angel leaned back against the
alley wall and Buffy leaned onto him.

Angel's vision blurred red and he desperately tried to look through the fog
of pain, just to see his lover. He felt that this was the last time he would.
He blinked rapidly and his eyes focused on a broken and bloody woman,
collapsed in his arms. He couldn't speak yet but he would in a minute. This
demon was more than just another target, to kill this demon would be his
redemption. He knew it deep down in his soul.

But he failed.

Angel tried, God knows he did but it was too strong. He was too weak. Buffy
was bleeding to death in his arms and he would not achieve that promised
humanity. He forced his sore arms around her, cradling her close. He
remembered seeing Lorne smash through a skylight, he was probably safe for
now. He hoped that Gunn and Wesley made it out of there before the demon did
anything worse.

As if on cue, a large light blanketed the sky and Angel closed his sensitive
eyes to stop from going blind. He numbly felt Buffy bury her face into his
torn and bloody shirt. Then, the light was gone but was replaced with a soft
whistling song.

Angel blinked confused and let out a shout of surprise as a fireball crashed
to the ground beside the two lovers. They both looked up in the sky to see
thousands of flames heading toward the earth. It was raining fire. Faraway
screams of terror and pain could be heard.

Buffy looked at her lover, forcing a sad smile on her features. In any other
situation, it would have seemed romantic. Two lovers, facing the harsh
reality under a light-filled sky. Only the light was flaming balls of fire
smashing down into the ground, into people, burning their flesh.

"I guess this is the end," Buffy whispered. Angel squeezed her hand, trying
to force a smile for his lover but he couldn't conjure the strength. He shook
his head, pressing her hand to his cheek, moving into her touch.

"We did good though, right? I mean, we helped a lot of people," Buffy's eyes
started tearing up and Angel knew she was thinking about the rest of her
family and friends.

Angel's thoughts couldn't help stray to his son, he hoped that he found some
place safe with Cordelia. He hoped the Fred and Gunn got to see each other
one last time. The vampire turned back to his slayer.

The rain of fire seemed to lessen but the moon had disappeared and the stars
were no more. One by one, city lights went out. Street lights, house lights,
building lights, everything went out.

"Yeah, we did good," Angel forced himself to whisper, it cut his already
damaged throat even more. Buffy hurriedly kissed her lover, smashing her lips
against his in a passion that neither of them known before. It was desperate
but slow and sorrowful. It was full of remembrance and bittersweet. Angel
pushed her broken body closer, tangling his hands in her blood died hair. He
pushed his tongue in her mouth, dueling against hers. She sobbed against him
as the last light in the city went out and the fire died.

There was nothing but complete darkness. Not even Angel's sensitive eye sight
could see a thing. It pained him that he couldn't even see Buffy, though she
was sitting right on his lap. Nothing but the roar of the demon above them
could be heard

"I love you," Buffy whispered against him.

"I love you." Angel kissed her forehead.

Then everything turned deafly silent, as if the whole world had stopped it's
movement and turned off the sound.

Then, the screams started.
