Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

Giles left for England, Willow gradually turned to the black magick, despite several attempts to fight her magick addiction she eventually sunk into it more and more. Anya got her vengeance demon powers back when Xander jilted her at the alter, due to cold feet, however found she still loved him & couldn't kill him, she eventually gave them up in favour of living with Xander. Spike and Buffy discovered a new found mutual lust for each other, as well as Spike discovering he could physically hurt Buffy (though no one else) and began a lust ridden, abusive relationship (abusive on both sides) and Dawn became a difficult teenager - drinking and stealing, eventually Anya and Xander got back together and moved to Washington, realising that they were not ready for marriage at the moment and wanted to experience more of life, they stayed together and Buffy has recently been told that Anya is pregnant with hers and Xanders first child. Willow sunk into deeper black magick, forcing Buffy to choose between her and Spike, creating a dividing rift between the best friends, that has never recovered. Tara was accidentally killed when she tried to prevent Willow from going any darker, which served as the final hinge for Willow. Willow left Sunnydale with her new cronies - Jonathan, Warren & Andrew to go to New York. Buffy split up with Spike because of the pressure of their relationship Spike stayed in Sunnydale to help Buffy slay and look after Dawn but things became too tense between Buffy and Spike, as Spike could not accept that Buffy did not want to be with him, and he still loved her. Buffy became withdrawn and lost. She lived only to slay and look after Dawn. Her friendship became even more strained until they drifted apart. Eventually Spike had had enough of staying to help Buffy with nothing in return. He didn't like Buffy as a person anymore and knew she was just an empty shell of her former self. He originally intended to go to L.A. to help his bloody poof of a grandsire (Angel) however after two months he left L.A. - due to the fact Angel found out about Buffy and Spike being together, Spike wisely took off and his current whereabouts are unknown. Two years ago Dawn became too difficult and rebellious for Buffy to handle, with only Spike to help she became increasingly difficult for Buffy to control, especially when she refused to listen to even Spike any more. Eventually Buffy decided to take her to Angel for a while to see if he could help her, just until the end of the school year. However Dawn got on so well with everyone that it was eventually decided to let Dawn stay, much to Buffy's upset, realising Angel could offer Dawn a more stable home than she could. She visited Buffy in the holidays and occasional weekends but lives with Angel, Fred, Lorne & Connor at the Hyperion. Buffy is still slaying in Sunnydale, without any help. She still speaks to Giles occasionally on the phone, and talks to Xander & Anya but she hasnt seen or spoken to Willow for almost two years and has no intention of contacting her former best friend. Buffy finds it crushingly lonely and misses Dawn a lot, despite her regular visits. Eventually her empty, abusive relationship with Spike, loss of her friends and burdens of the slayer all caused Buffy to have a breakdown, and she turns to Angel for help.
